A 13-year-old FS mixed breed dog was evaluated for a history of elevated liver enzymes. Recent laboratory testing had shown inappropriate urine SG, microalbuminuria, elevated liver enzyme activity, high-normal calcium, and hypercholesterolemia. CBC was within normal limits.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Hepatic mass can be due to an adenoma, adenocarcinoma, biliary carcinoma, fibrosarcoma, etc.

Image Interpretation

Most of the liver was homogenous and normal in echogenicity. There were, however, heterogeneous indiscreet margins and a mass noted in the mid to left liver measuring at least 11.05 x 5.65cm. The contours of the liver were normal.

DX

Hepatoma, mild lymphoplasmacytic cholangiohepatitis, cellular swelling, eosinophilic infiltration.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Liver pathology – vacuolar hepatopathy, reactive hepatopathy, toxic, nodular hyperplasia, neoplasia, infection (bacterial, fungal.) Early renal disease.

Sampling

US-guided true-cut biopsy of liver mass revealed hepatoma, mild lymphoplasmacytic cholangiohepatitis, cellular swelling, eosinophilic infiltration.
