A 10-year-old neutered male Golden Retriever dog was presented for evaluation of dysphagia with a palpable mass in the throat.

DX

Hemangiosarcoma of the lymph node

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Left thyroid mass, likely thyroid carcinoma. This appears resectable.

Image Interpretation

The thyroid region in this patient revealed a mixed, hypoechoic and cystic mass that measured 6.42 x 4.0 cm. This impinged upon and expanded upon regional tissue. The right thyroid revealed heterogeneous parenchymal changes that measured 1.8 x 0.5 cm. The left lobe appears encapsulated and resectable. Surgical consultation is recommended. Deviation of the trachea, esophagus and carotid arteries are all present.

Outcome

None

Comments

Surgical consultation is recommended as well as full thyroid panel to assess the tumor functionality. Chest radiographs and imaging of the cranial mediastinum are also recommended. CT evaluation would be ideal to assess any invasion into the isthmus between the right and left thyroid lobes.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Salivary/thyroid gland – neoplasia, abscess, granuloma, cyst
Lymph node – neoplasia, reactive
Perforated pharyngeal/esophageal foreign body
Non-organ associated neoplasia, abscess, granuloma

Sampling

Biopsy of the neck associated with the left thyroid was performed and revealed hemangiosarcoma of the lymph node.
