Gastric lymphoma in an 8 year old FS DSH cat

This 8-year-old spayed female DSH cat was presented for rapid weight loss, anorexia, and vomiting. The physical exam revealed mild dehydration, intestinal thickening on palpation, and mild hyperthermia. CBC and blood chemistry values were normal. Urinalysis was not performed.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Suggestive for gastric lymphoma or carcinoma.

Image Interpretation

Examination of the gastrointestinal tract revealed variable areas of hypoechoic mural thickening with loss of mural detail. The mesenteric root lymph nodes and epigastric lymph nodes were enlarged. The stomach presented significant gastric wall thickening measuring 1.5cm in certain areas and was sampled by fine needle aspirate.

Gastric lymphoma

Outcome

The owners declined chemotherapy. The patient was treated with 1mg/kg prednisolone BID with marked improvement regarding the clinical symptoms, increased appetite and weight gain 1 month post diagnosis.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Intestinal neoplasia, IBD, maldigestion, extra GI neoplasia, GI foreign body, pancreatitis.

Sampling

22 gauge US-guided FNA of the proximal gastric wall revealed gastric lymphoma with suppurative inflammation.
