This 5-year-old FS French Bulldog presented for persistent vomiting over a 1 week period. Chronic occasional vomiting was also noted in the history. The physical exam and blood analysis on this dog were normal.

DX

Gastric foreign body with gastritis

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Foreign gastric material which may be causing partial or intermittent luminal obstruction. Retention of gastric contents secondary to a motility disorder, either primary or secondary to an inflammatory or infiltrative process could also be considered.

Image Interpretation

The body of the stomach is moderately distended with poorly organized echogenic material possessing dirty distal acoustic shadowing.

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully and is successfully managed on a hypoallergenic dietary protocol.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – IBD, gastroenteritis, Addison`s disease, gastric foreign body, dietary intolerance, infectious, neoplasia; pancreatic pathology – pancreatitis,

Sampling

Exploratory surgery revealed a 1/2 inch baby corn cob from the gastric lumen with other variable small foreign material. Gastric wall biopsy revealed mild chronic lymphoplasmacytic gastritis without evidence of helicobacter infection.
