A 14 month old SF Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog was presented for evaluation of vomiting for a few days and history of eating foreign material.

DX

Gastric foreign body with pyloric obstruction.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gastric fabric -like foreign body with pyloric obstruction. Hyperperistalsis of the stomach was noted with empty aperistalsis of the small intestine.

Image Interpretation

The stomach was full of ingesta embedding into the pylorus with fluid accumulation in the fundus. This is a common presentation with fabric or similar foreign matter. Immediate gastrotomy and gastric biopsies would be recommended to assess for underlying disease. The intestine appeared normal at the time of sonogram and the foreign matter appears to be localized to the stomach at this time.

Outcome

The patient had surgery and rope covered with fecal material was removed.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Vomiting – foreign body, non-specific gastro-enteritis (viral/bacterial/protozoal/helminths), dietary indiscretion

Sampling

None
