This 2-year-old neutered male Labrador Retriever dog presented for vomiting and 3 days of anorexia. The clinical exam revealed a focally painful abdomen. Radiographs were normal. CBC and blood analyses were normal.

DX

Foreign body obstruction

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Mechanical ileus secondary to an intraluminal foreign body.

Image Interpretation

The bowel demonstrates an obstructive pattern. The intestine is focally distended, with a curvilinear echogenic focus with strong distal acoustic shadowing suggesting the presence of dense luminal material.

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully post enterotomy.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Intestinal obstruction (foreign body or intussusception), gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, organ torsion, GDV, neoplasia.

Sampling

Surgical enterotomy revealed a piece of a tennis ball embedded in the mid-jejunum.
