CT – structurally normal brachycephalic calvarium in a 1 year old M Chihuahua dog with mucoid nasal discharge

This 1 year old M intact chihuahua has had a mucoid nasal discharge since 4/23/16; currently on Prednisone 5mg 1/2 T po BID (immunosuppressive dose for vasculitis)

DX

The computed tomography of the head is within normal limits. There is no structural evidence of rhinitis at this point.

Image Interpretation

CT of the head, plain and post contrast series- The conformation of the calvarium is typical for a brachycephalic dog. Leftward deviation of the nasal septum is noted within the rostral third of the nasal cavity which is an incidental finding. The frontal sinuses are rudimentary. The apical alveolar bone is thin in general and emphasizing the incisival bone of the maxilla as well as the upper premolar teeth.

Outcome

The patient may be prone to development of oronasal fistulae in the future in case periodontal disease with alveolar bone atrophy evolves. Proactive dental care is recommended.
