Case Study

CT – significant right-sided cerebral mass effect in a 9 year old F Dachshund with neurological episodes

This 9 year old F Dachshund dog presented with seizures/neurological episodes. Recumbant, minimally responsive, mentally inappropriate.

DX

The computed tomography reveals a significant right-sided cerebral mass effect

Image Interpretation

CT of the head – A marked mass effect of the right cerebral hemisphere with significant shift of the
cerebral falx to the left is noted. The exact origin of the mass effect cannot be
determined. The delineation of the lateral ventricles is unclear.

Outcome

A space-occupying lesion within the right cerebral hemisphere is suspected. The findings
are not specific for a certain disease. Possible differential diagnoses include neoplasia
(with intraaxial neoplasia being more likely based on the pertinent findings),
inflammatory brain disease and acute cerebral infarction. The CT scan should be complemented by a CSF examination. If that is inconclusive
for the underlying disease further definition by an MRI may be considered in this case.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

R/O encephalitis, neoplasia, liver failure, portosystemic shunt, epilepsy, toxicity, infection
