Case Study

CT – Recurring oral ameloblastoma for the right hemimandible, no metastases noted pre-surgical in a 12 year old FS Chihuahua

This 12 year old FS Chihuahua has a history of oral ameloblastoma; surgery on right mandible is planned

DX

The computed tomographic findings match the recurring oral ameloblastoma of the right hemimandible.

Image Interpretation

CT of the head and thorax –

A slightly ill defined bony defect is seen in the lateral aspect of the right hemimandibular corpus extending from the 405 to the 408. Part of the medullary bone and the medioventral cortex of the mandible is maintained. The neighboring tooth roots of the 404, 405 and 408 are within normal limits. The lesion does not cross the mandibular symphysis.  The brain is included in the study and presents within normal limits. The computed tomography of the thorax is within normal limits, no metastases noted.

Outcome

Partial hemimandibulectomy from the 404 to 408 would be the therapy of choice if not
yet done so. There is no evidence of macroscopic metastatic spread to the regional lymph nodes,
pulmonary interstitium or mediastinal lymph nodes.
