CT – Negative for vascular ring anomaly in a 8 week old F DSH kitten presented for regurgitation

Case Study

CT – Negative for vascular ring anomaly in a 8 week old F DSH kitten presented for regurgitation

This 8 week old F DSH kitten began regurgitating when switched to solid food; esophagram consistent with vascular ring anomoly.

This 8 week old F DSH kitten began regurgitating when switched to solid food; esophagram consistent with vascular ring anomoly.

DX

The computed tomography is negative for a vascular ring anomaly.

Image Interpretation

CT of the thorax – The vascular anatomy is as expected. The aortic arch emerges to the left of the oesophagus and trachea. The endotracheal tube extends into the origin of the right main stem bronchus. The right lung is overinflated, the left lung underinflated. Moderate leftward shift of the mediastinum is noted. Mild dilation of the oesophagus with gas is noted cranial to the tracheal bifurcation.

Outcome

The mild dilation of the esophagus cranial to the tracheal bifurcation may either be associated with the general anesthesia, easophageal redundancy or a focal megaesophaus/diverticulum of unknown origin such as idiopathic, after chemical or mechanical irritation.

Further definition by esophagoscopy and dynamic positive contrast swallow esophagogram is recommended to rule out swallowing disorders and other esophageal pathology as aforementioned.
