Case Study

CT – Mandibular soft tissue neoplasia biopsied as squamous cell carcinoma wth aggressive osteolysis in a 10 year old FS Golden Retriever

This 10 yeaer old FS golden Retriever dog presented for a right sided mandibular mass that had quickly increased in size over 2-3 weeks; biopsy results squamous cell carcinomal. CT needed for metastases check to lymph nodes and surgical planning

This 10 yeaer old FS golden Retriever dog presented for a right sided mandibular mass that had quickly increased in size over 2-3 weeks; biopsy results squamous cell carcinomal. CT needed for metastases check to lymph nodes and surgical planning

DX

malignant soft tissue neoplasia with secondary aggressive osteolysis involving most of the right mandibular corpus which is consistent with the pre-diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma.

Image Interpretation

CT of the head – medullary bone involving the right mandible from the 1st premolar (405) to the 3rd molar (411). The affected part of the mandibular corpus exhibits a large amount of amorphous periosteal reactions. The alveolar bones are lytic as well and the molar teeth are deviated out of their respective alveoles. The soft tissue component of the mass reveals non-uniform contrast enhancement and expands the bone. The lesion does not crosse the midline/symphysis.
There is moderate generalized loss of the masticatory muscles on the right side noted.
The right medial retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph nodes show mild generalized enlargement with preserved short to long axis ratio below 0.5 and regular general architecture.

Outcome

The lesion extends from the 405 to the 411 and spares the left mandible. The masticatory muscle atrophy is likely due to chronic disuse. Reactive lymph node hyperplasia is seen ipsilaterally. Based on the CT findings metastatic spread to the regional lymph nodes is very unlikely
