Congenital renal dysplasia in a 1 year old FS Corgi

A 1-year-old SF Corgi dog was presented with a history of intermittent urinary incontinence since puppyhood. Isosthenuria (1.012), elevated protein to creatinine ratio, and microalbuminuria were present on urinalysis. Elevated creatinine was evident on biochemistry panel.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

The changes noted in the kidneys bilaterally is most likely consistent with congenital renal dysplasia. No obvious signs of an intramural or extramural ectopic ureter were noted. A biopsy of the kidneys is recommended to differentiate primary renal dysplasia from other primary renal inflammatory conditions. A small urethral or vaginal ectopic ureter may still be possible despite the lack of overt ultrasound evidence for this condition. Potential treatment may include change to a renal diet if proteinuria is consistent on urinalysis. Benazepril at 0.5mg/kg once or twice a day is recommended.

Image Interpretation

The urinary bladder, trigone and pelvic urethra presented normal wall thicknesses with anechoic urine and normal tone. No signs of an intramural or extramural ectopic ureter was noted. The post-bladder urethra was normal with no urine dilation noted. The kidneys revealed thickened cortices and normal corticomedullary definition bilaterally. Mild pyelectasia was noted in the right kidney and measured 1.5 x 0.38cm; Mild pyelectasia in the left kidney measured 1.5 x 0.4cm.
