Case Study

Colonic lymphoma in a 12 year old MN DSH cat

This 12-year-old MN DSH was presented for chemotherapy for previously diagnosed lymphoma (3 years prior). He had been responding well to treatment but was recently becoming increasingly anorexic. Preliminary blood analysis revealed a mild leukocytosis with a left shift and mild elevations in amylase. The patient was otherwise clinically normal.

DX

Colonic lymphoma

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Intestinal wall mass consistent with neoplasia. Granulomatous disease such as feline infectious peritonitis or equivocal inflammatory disease is considered less likely.

Image Interpretation

Obstructive mural colonic mass. Marked, focal, symmetrical wall thickening with loss of wall layering is present. The empty lumen is defined by the centralized linear echogenicity. An obstructive stool pattern is evident (10 o`clock position).

Outcome

This patient has responded well to the Wisconsin chemotherapy protocol for an additional year. The patient is currently asymptomatic.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Recurrence of lymphoma, gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, abscessation, other neoplasia.

Sampling

Laparoscopic biopsies initially revealed mast cell disease. However, surgical resection and partial colectomy revealed colonic lymphoma.
