Bilateral adrenal masses with mineralization of the right adrenal in a 6 year old MN ferret

Case Study

Bilateral adrenal masses with mineralization of the right adrenal in a 6 year old MN ferret

The patient is a 6 year old neutered male ferret with a history of increased ALT and increased bile acids.

The patient is a 6 year old neutered male ferret with a history of increased ALT and increased bile acids.

DX

Bilateral adrenal masses with mineralization

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Mineralizing right adrenal gland mass. Concurrent, mineralizing, enlarged left adrenal gland mass with minor cystic changes. Bilateral adrenalectomy could be justified in this patient as no overt vascular invasion was noted. An intimate relationship between both adrenal gland masses and vena cava is noted. However, the visible vena cava was free of evident thrombosis or neoplasia.

Image Interpretation

The left adrenal gland contains a mixed, echogenic mass that measured 1.62 cm. No obvious vascular invasion was noted, however expansion of the left adrenal gland upon the vena cava was significant. The right adrenal gland contained a mineralizing mass that measured 1.22 x 1.16 cm.

Outcome

None

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Chronic liver disease, hepatic neoplasia, reactive hepatopathy, GI disease.
