09_00172 Dutch T BPH and prostatitis. Bladder debris.

Case Study

09_00172 Dutch T BPH and prostatitis. Bladder debris.

A 9-year-old intact male Labrador that had been treated for bacterial cystitis was presented for evaluation of ongoing dribbling of urine. Urinalysis showed WBC, epithelial cells, and crystals.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Prostatomegaly.
BPH prostatitis pattern.
Bladder debris.

Image Interpretation

The urinary bladder, trigone and pelvic urethra presented normal wall thicknesses with anechoic urine and normal tone. The bladder presented a large amount of debris, dependent sand and probable blood clots. No evidence of inflammatory or neoplastic changes were noted. The ureters were not visible and therefore considered normal.
The prostate in this patient was swollen, edematous with areas of striations and cysts. The cysts will likely resolve; however, they may have underlying abscessation. There were variable areas of capsular expansion. The prostate measured 7.85 x 5.58 cm.
