Barium before Ultrasound?

Barium before Ultrasound?

We had a possible foreign body in a 2-year-old DSH.
Our question was does barium affect the image quality of an ultrasound?
Can you still scan after it has been administered?

Barium would affect image

Barium would affect image quality. One can still scan after barium but pathology can be missed and if unsure then repeat the ultrasound a few hours later. Ultrasound generally eliminates the need for barium as a foreign body can be diagnosed on ultrasound.

Thank you Dr.Lobetti, this
Thank you Dr.Lobetti, this question always pops up in the clinic when a possible foreign body presents and I can never remember what the recommendations are. Now I can just search the forum for this post and comment trail in the future. Thanks again! 🙂

It makes it a bit more
It makes it a bit more tedious to work around and depending how long the barium has been in there and the other amount of fluid it will actually hide a FB as the barium will shadow as well. Obstructive pattern criteria still exists but it can be more difficult to identify the luminal structure if present.

Keep barium on the shelf and look at our GI obstruction criteria abstract in Resources:)
