Case Study

Heart based mass superimposing the left atrium and enveloping the aorta extending to the right auricle in a 7.5 year old F Flat Coated Retriever

This 7.5 year old F Flat Coated etriever dog was presented for and episode of syncopeand a I/VI systolic heart murmur. Rads show cardiomegaly, and possible heart based tumor. Labs show GGTP increased. Otherwise WNL.

Image Interpretation

Heart based mass that is superimposing the left atrium and enveloping the aorta extending to the right auricle. Obstructive pattern to the pulmonary outflow. Secondary passive congestion owing to right outflow obstruction and likely emerging pulmonary hypertension.

Outcome

Cardiology/oncology referral is recommended in this patient; however, this is not surgical. The
probabilities are aortic body tumor/chemodectoma. Connective tissue tumor would be the next
possibility. There is a low possibility of hemangiosarcoma given the echotexture. There was no evidence of pericardial effusion at this time.
