Left Ectopic ureter in a 5 month old F Greater Swiss Mountain dog

Case Study

Left Ectopic ureter in a 5 month old F Greater Swiss Mountain dog

A 5-month-old female Greater Swiss Mountain dog was presented for evaluation of nocturia.

A 5-month-old female Greater Swiss Mountain dog was presented for evaluation of nocturia.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Left ectopic ureter. The right ureter appears to be in proper position, but should be inspected at the time of surgery or during the interventional radiology with possible laser ablation for correction. IVP could also be considered in this patient for further definition. However, there is adequate evidence of ectopic ureter at the left. The right appears to be in proper position, yet it is slightly dilated. Full inspection would be indicated.

Image Interpretation

The urinary bladder itself was unremarkable, yet the left ureter was dilated in this patient and measured 0.23 cm at the level of the urinary bladder. Left ectopic ureter bypassed the trigone and cystourethral junction, entering into the pelvic urethra. This should be amenable to laser ablation through endoscopy. The right ureter was followed to the right ureteral papilla that appeared to be patent and in the correct position.

Iliac lymph node was mildly enlarged and measured 2.5 x 0.77 cm.

The ovaries were normal. The right ovary measured 0.66 cm and the left ovary measured 0.65 cm. The uterus was uniform and measured 0.79 cm.

The kidneys were normal in size and contour, yet the left kidney presented a dilated proximal ureter.
