Case Study

04_00511 Macy R Gastric wall thickening, possible pythiosis

A 1-year-old SF German shepherd dog that had been diagnosed and treated for pythiosis –serology ELISA and presence of fungal organisms seen on non-healing skin wound on histopathology.

DX

Gastric wall thickening

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gastric wall thickening. Suspect pythiosis gastropathy. This meets neoplastic criteria. Ultrasound-guided FNA or more likely ultrasound-guided core biopsy of the stomach may be necessary for a definitive diagnosis in this patient.
Micronodular spleen. Ultrasound-guided FNA is recommended. The spleen may be reactive or simple German Shepherd hypersplenism.

Image Interpretation

The stomach in this patient revealed diffuse thickening of the gastric wall measuring 2.3 cm serosa to mucosa with pericapsular inflammatory pattern. The small intestine and colon were unremarkable.
The spleen was mildly enlarged with slight micronodular changes.
