Renal Mass, Lung Neoplasia in a 10 year old MN Labrador Retriever mix

Case Study

Renal Mass, Lung Neoplasia in a 10 year old MN Labrador Retriever mix

A 10-years-old MN Labrador cross was presented for evaluation of mild anemia, leukocytosis, possible mass, lameness, and weakness.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Renal mass and lung mass likely metastatic round cell neoplasia or similar. Potential hepatic involvement. .

Image Interpretation

Left kidney presented a 6.36 x 4.6 cm mixed hypoechoic mass with pericapsular inflammatory pattern deriving from the caudal cortex. Left kidney itself measured 8.9 cm. Regional lymph nodes did not appear overtly affected. Retroperitoneal infiltration by the kidney mass was also noted as the body wall appeared to lose detail.

Right caudal lung revealed a mixed hypoechoic mass measuring 9.1 x 6.2 cm with peripheral air entrapment indicative of a lung mass. The lung mass very well could be separate issue or related to the kidney mass itself. Regional inflammation noted throughout cranial abdomen.

Outcome

None

Comments

Poor prognosis. Immediate chemotherapeutic intervention recommended.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

abdominal pathology – mass (neoplasia, cyst, granuloma, abscess of spleen/kidney/mesentery/lymph node);
Rupture splenic/hepatic tumor;
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia

Sampling

FNA of the lung mass malignant neoplasia, necrosis and inflammation. FNA of the kidneys revealed a renal tubular cell population, cellular disintegration, and cell population with atypia.
