The echocardiogram in this patient demonstrated normal left atrial size and structure with no evidence of “smoke” or thrombi. The mitral valve presented insufficiency. The left ventricle presented mild excessive volume excessive concentric septal and free wall thicknesses. The myocardium presented normal echogenicity without evidence of significant fibrotic or ischemic disease. Contractility was adequate. The left ventricular outflow tract demonstrated normal laminar flow without evidence of hemodynamically significant insufficiency or excessive outflow velocity. Subjective assessment of the right atrium and auricle revealed normal size, structure and content. No evidence of masses was noted. Tricuspid valvular assessment demonstrated expected spectral and color flow Doppler findings for this age patient. The right ventricle was of normal size (1/3 diameter of LV), echogenicity and thickness. No evidence of dilation nor restriction was noted. The pulmonary artery was prominent in the post valvular region with a large amount of turbulence in the deep pulmonary artery. Doppler revealed a holosystolic flow and a velocity of 4.2 m/sec. This is consistent with patent ductus arteriosus. Referral to an interventional cardiologist for potential coil occluded placement would be recommended. No visible pericardial or free pleural fluid was noted. No echographically detectable evidence of infiltrative disease was visible.
