Echogenic density on feline echo

  • 6 year old mn DSH with BCS=6/9 presenting for a hacking cough.
  • Cat is currently on prednisone for atopy.
  • Chest radiographs showed a rounded right heart on the VD view and a perihilar haziness on the lateral view.
  • Echo is normal except for a hyperechoic density seen between the aorta and the left atrium.
  • I suspect that this is just fat, yes?

Yes this is a normal heart

Yes this is a normal heart regarding structure function and volume and the echogenic tissue you point to is heart based fat. It will be very prominent in function of a higher body score and will be more echogenic as the patient gets older. Unless an echogenic clot in a chamber (ra or la usually) typically echogenic things that dont deviate structures in the heart are benigg with exception of fibrosarcomas and chemodectomas that are echogenic but they create a mass effects on adjacents vessels like the coronary aa or aorta. Remember if its curvilinear and kinda sits in the sturcture without deviating its usually benign.
