Hello,
Winston is a 12 years old mixed breed that cam in limping and very painfull at spine/shoulder palpation. X-rays of the right front leg were suggestive showed radiolucency on the scapula at the site of acromion. We took some FNB samples under U/S guidance and I will post some pictures of that region. Cytology is pending.

Absolutely! The cortical
Absolutely! The cortical interruption and amorphous periosteal reaction is highly suggestive of a neoplasia. These are not very common. But I ve seen lympho, fibro, hemangio and osteochondrosarcoma in that region with similar appearance. It is very interesting that many of these have a large soft tissue component even if originating from the bone. this soft tissue component can be very large and is almost anechoic with displacement of the regular muscular echotexture in your case. this part of the tumor frequently gives an excellent diagnostic yield when sampled under US guidance. Also cortical defects should be detected and used to sample the intramedullary part of the tumor.
Did is you scan the supf. cervical and axillary lymph nodes too?
there is a large amount of shoulder joint effusion too which is likely a sequel to the aggressive/infiltrative primary disease.
Thank you Dr. Ondreka!
Thank you Dr. Ondreka! Unfortunatelly no other scanning and we did this just for FNB-cytology because our initial radiology report was negative for any aggresive destructive lesions…..
U/S combined with X-ray is sucha a great tool for MSK. I need to learn and do more of these studies:)
