A 12-year-old SF Boston Terrier was presented for evaluation of stranguria and urinary incontinence when asleep. Urinalysis showed specific gravity 1.014 and hematuria.

A 12-year-old SF Boston Terrier was presented for evaluation of stranguria and urinary incontinence when asleep. Urinalysis showed specific gravity 1.014 and hematuria.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Obstructed trigone and proximal urethra owing to strongly mineralizing tissue proliferation. There is a strong suspicion of transitional cell carcinoma, possible embedded calculi with proliferative tissue, however, this is less likely.
Surgical exploratory with expectations towards cystourethral junction and trigonal reconstruction would be necessary. However, surgical resolution may not be possible.

Image Interpretation

The pelvic urethra in this patient was dilated and measured 0.57 cm. There was 3.47 cm of mineralization with mild tissue proliferation. The mineralization appears to enter into the pelvic urethra and appears to be embedded within tissue proliferation and obstructed both ureters. This is strongly suggestive for strongly mineralizing transitional cell carcinoma.
